Titanium sponge is a porous, lightweight, and high-strength material created through the reduction of titanium tetrachloride (TiCl₄) in a chemical process, typically involving magnesium or sodium. Its sponge-like structure, achieved through these reduction and vacuum distillation processes, serves as an intermediate product for manufacturing titanium metal and its alloys. Known for its superior corrosion resistance, low density, and high melting point, titanium sponge is indispensable in producing high-performance materials used in aerospace, defense, medical, and industrial applications. The classification methods of titanium deposits vary in the articles of different scholars and experts, but the difference is not big. Titanium ore is divided into 4 types according to reserve management combined with genesis: primary titanium (magnetic) iron ore type, ilmenite placer type, rutile type and rutile placer type. Titanium has two main industrial chains, one is the chemical industry chain, and the other is the field industry chain. After mining in the mine, vanadium-titanium magnetite ore or titanium ore is produced, and titanium concentrate is formed after beneficiation. Titanium concentrate has two main industrial chains, one of which is: titanium ore → titanium concentrate → titanium dioxide → titanium dioxide application, accounting for about 80%, and the other industrial chain is titanium ore → titanium concentrate → sponge titanium → titanium material → titanium material application, accounting for about 10%.

The ingots are then processed into materials (sheets, strips, pipes, bars, wires, profiles and forgings, etc.) through plastic processing methods such as forging, rolling and extrusion, and then used in military and high-end industrial fields such as aerospace, construction, petrochemicals, ships, and medical treatment.
In recent years, the global production of sponge titanium has been growing year by year. In 2022, the total global production of sponge titanium has reached 260,000 tons. The top three sponge titanium producers are China, Japan and Russia, with China accounting for about 57.7%. From 1995 to 2022, China’s titanium sponge production can be generally divided into three stages: the first is the low production period from 1995 to 2004, with titanium sponge production ranging from 2,000 to 4,400 tons; the second is the high-speed growth period from 2005 to 2013, with titanium sponge production increasing from 6,500 tons to 100,000 tons; the third is the high-level fluctuation period after 2013, and affected by the global mining crisis, China’s titanium sponge production declined from 2014 to 2016. After 2017, China’s titanium sponge production has steadily increased, with a CAGR of 7.5% from 2017 to 2022. It is expected that China’s titanium sponge production capacity will increase to more than 400,000 tons by 2025.
Titanium sponge production can be divided into full-process and semi-process processes. In the future, the new production capacity will mainly be based on the full-process method, and the full-process method has a more significant cost advantage. Many titanium sponge manufacturers adopt the full-process production technology, thus realizing the closed-loop circulation of MgCl, and then realizing energy saving, consumption reduction, quality improvement, cost reduction and efficiency improvement in the titanium sponge production process. At present, some semi-process enterprises in China are building titanium tetrachloride production lines and planning to build magnesium electrolysis production lines. Enterprises with full-process production lines but semi-process production are planning to resume production of chlorination and magnesium electrolysis.
